💾 How Computers Think — Binary Numbers
Here's a secret: computers are actually a little bit... simple! A computer can't understand words or pictures directly. It can only understand ON and OFF — like a light switch. That's it. Just two things.
We call ON a 1 and OFF a 0. This ON/OFF language is called binary (bi- means "two," like a bicycle has two wheels).
So how does a computer show letters, colors, and games with only 0s and 1s? It uses lots of switches together! Eight switches in a row is called a byte, and different patterns of 0s and 1s stand for different letters and numbers — like a secret code.

This is the very bottom of computers — and everything else (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, even Python) is really just a friendlier way for us to "speak" to the computer, which then quietly turns our words into binary underneath. And Kilby and Noyce didn't even know about each other — they were each just quietly working hard, and both ended up changing history. 📱💻📺 Does this happen inside phones and TVs too?
Yes! Every phone, TV, and cable has a tiny brain (a chip) hidden inside, made of the exact same kind of ON/OFF switches as our Binary Playground — just billions of them, working incredibly fast. A phone taking a photo, a TV showing your favourite show, a cable carrying a video call — it's all still just 0s and 1s, racing around at lightning speed!
🔤 The Computer's Secret Code (Letters → Numbers)
You already know computers only understand 0s and 1s — so how does a computer store a letter like "A"? Simple: every letter secretly has its own number! It's called ASCII, and it's like a decoder ring that every computer in the world agreed to use.
📖 A Story About One Shared Language
Long ago, people all spoke one language and understood each other perfectly. Then, the story goes, their words became confused, and everyone suddenly spoke differently — nobody could understand anybody else anymore, and a great tower they were building together had to stop.
Computers once had that exact same problem! In the early days, one company's computer might use the number 72 for the letter "H," while another company's computer used a totally different number for the same letter. Two computers trying to talk to each other were like two people speaking confused, different languages — nothing made sense between them.
So in 1963, people came together and agreed on one shared code every computer would use — undoing that confusion, on purpose. They called it ASCII. Ever since, "H" has meant 72 everywhere on Earth — every phone, every laptop, every website. One language, agreed on together.

Bob didn't do it alone — a whole team of engineers at an American standards group debated and agreed on every single number together.
